Nigerian National Deported from Bali After 93-Day Overstay
A Nigerian national with the initials IO has been deported by the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office after being found to have overstayed for 93 days. She claimed she did not have enough money to buy a flight ticket back to her country.
IO entered Indonesia on 17 November 2025 through the Immigration Checkpoint at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta using a Visit Visa. Her residence permit was valid until 15 May 2026.
According to her statement, IO came to Indonesia to stay and look for work opportunities. While in Bali, the woman was known to have moved between several places in the Canggu area. She also went sightseeing, visiting beaches and cafes and seeking friends in Bali.
However, after her residence permit expired, IO neither extended it nor left Indonesian territory. She claimed she no longer had enough money to buy a flight ticket back to Nigeria.
IO’s overstay came to light after she was reported by a friend to the police on 13 August 2026. Based on the report, IO was detained by the Kuta Police Sector and subsequently handed over to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office on 16 August 2026 for examination regarding her immigration status.
After examination and further investigation, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office imposed an Immigration Administrative Action in the form of deportation against IO. She was also proposed for inclusion on the blacklist in accordance with the provisions of the prevailing laws and regulations.
IO was then deported by the Ngurah Rai Immigration Intelligence and Enforcement Team on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, on Qatar Airways flight QR961 with the Denpasar-Doha route. From Doha, she continued her journey to Lagos, Nigeria.
The Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Muhamad Novyandri, stressed that every foreigner in Indonesia is obliged to comply with the provisions regarding residence permits, even if they face financial constraints.
‘A residence permit is a time limit that must be respected by every foreigner while in Indonesian territory. When the validity period of the residence permit has expired, the person concerned is obliged to immediately leave Indonesian territory or extend it in accordance with the applicable provisions. The reason of limited funds does not eliminate this obligation,’ said Novyandri on Thursday, 20 August 2026.
Novyandri added that the action against IO was part of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office’s efforts to maintain order and compliance with immigration law, particularly in Bali, which is one of the main destinations for foreign tourists.
‘We will continue to conduct supervision and take firm action against foreigners who violate immigration provisions. We hope that all foreigners in Bali can understand and respect the applicable rules, including ensuring that their residence permits remain valid while in Indonesia,’ he added.
The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office emphasised that deportation is part of the implementation of the immigration law enforcement function as well as an effort to keep Bali a safe, orderly and conducive tourism destination.
