Nickname for the minister
Nickname for the minister

In response to Siswono Yudohusodo's statement about the need
for government officials to declare their property/wealth, I
would like to say that this quite reasonable suggestion deserves
a thumbs-up and must be echoed by other officials. Why? Siswono
is very much concerned with a report that Indonesia is Asia's
most corrupt country (perhaps also No. 1 in the world in this
regard).
I am rather upset, however, to see that on the one hand we
have a minister with a good intention/suggestion for the sake of
his country, namely to see that Indonesia is clean and commands
respect, but on the other hand there is also a minister who has
said that it is not necessary for government officials to
report/declare their property/wealth.
This is because every month they pay taxes and because there
are valid laws regarding this property/wealth ownership.
All right, we have many valid laws on corruption and collusion
but what guarantee can these laws give? I don't think they will
give any because regulations will remain regulations and they
exist only for formality's sake.
Once again, in my opinion Siswono has made a very progressive
statement and perhaps he deserves to be called "a daring
minister" or "an anticorruption and anticollusion minister", or
even "a wealth-reporting minister".
May Siswono's idea receive a positive response from other
government officials. Is it likely that there are other Siswonos
apart from Siswono Yudohusodo? Perhaps yes... perhaps no.
