NHM Promotes Field-Based Learning in the SEG UNPAD SC Study Club
The close relationship between industry and academia was evident at the Study Club 2: “Introduction of Hydrothermal Alteration” event, held by the Learning Division of SEG UNPAD SC on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
In front of hundreds of students from the Faculty of Geological Engineering (FTG) at Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM) participated not only as a presenter but also as a “senior colleague” and partner committed to developing the next generation.
This commitment was further demonstrated when NHM donated authentic rock specimens from the Gosowong Gold Mine area. This initiative aims to bring industrial realities into the classroom, ensuring that students can directly interact with and learn from Indonesia’s natural resources as a foundation for their future research and learning.
The event took place on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Bale Rucita, the UNPAD Rectorate Building, and was moderated by Dr. Aton Patonah, S.T., M.T., Head of the FTG UNPAD Quality Assurance Unit.
In his opening remarks, Aton expressed his appreciation to NHM for taking the time to participate in the event despite the company’s busy operational schedule. “We thank NHM for their participation; it is not easy to bring industry practitioners in the midst of their busy operations. This also proves that alumni connections are essential as a bridge for collaboration between campus and the world of work,” he said.
The collaboration featured three senior NHM practitioners who shared their direct experiences on mining operations from various technical perspectives.
Bahrudin Abiad, Manager of the Kencana Underground Mine, began the session by presenting a comparative study of best practices in underground mine operations at Gosowong.
The presentation was followed by Rendy Nurdianto, NHM Exploration Manager, who explained the characteristics of hydrothermal alteration in epithermal deposits through a case study of the Gosowong Gold Mine.
Meanwhile, Dharma Irwanda, NHM Geology Superintendent, complemented the series of materials by emphasizing the importance of drilling accuracy as one of the key factors in the success of mineral exploration and mining processes.
In addition to sharing materials, NHM donated altered rock samples and examples of mineralization originating from rocks around the Gosowong Vein deposit. These specimens are characteristic rocks or indicators of the presence of economically viable gold mineralization in the Gosowong deposit. This donation is a concrete form of support to help students better understand the concept of hydrothermal alteration.
“With the availability of altered rock and mineralization samples from Gosowong, students can directly see the output of hydrothermal activity related to the presence of economically viable gold mineralization. This is an ideal teaching material and can also be used as a reference indicator in understanding the characteristics of alteration zones and exploration models for potential future gold mineralization,” said Rendy.
This session was a valuable opportunity for students to engage in direct dialogue with practitioners, transforming the classroom into a vibrant forum for discussion on the realities and challenges of the mining industry.
Through this participation, NHM aims to demonstrate its commitment to supporting future geologists. More than just sharing knowledge, NHM is committed to continuing to foster good relationships with the education sector to help young people grow into competent, confident individuals who are ready to enter the workforce.
