NGOs urge police to probe Mayor
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: A number of youth, journalist groups
and non-governmental organizations have appealed to the police to
investigate the alleged bribery case involving acting Kendari
mayor Andi Kaharuddin.
"We are collecting evidence on the case of alleged bribery by
acting Kendari mayor who allegedly gave money to the Kendari
councillors in a bid to have the mayor's accountability report
approved by council members," Chairman of the Southeast Sulawesi
Corruption Watch M. Ichsan said here on Thursday.
He said the case came to the surface when one of the
councillors, Salahuddin, refused to accept money from an unknown
source. Other members admitted the money was given by the mayor
as an allowance for attending a workshop on June 24 in West Java.
A local legal consultant, Albab Paproeka said, "The case
involving the council can be categorized as a bribe because we
have both evidence and witnesses, therefore the law enforcers
must undertake legal proceedings to settle the case".--Antara
