NGOs fail to file reports on funds

JAKARTA: More than 90 percent of 1,650 local non-governmental organizations (NGO) failed to file accountability reports of donations allocated by the ministry of social affairs during the period of 2001 and 2002.

"We have requested for every NGO to file the accountability reports as we have to submit another report to the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK)," said Minister of Social Affairs Bachtiar Chamsyah on Thursday.

He added that under the current regulations, every NGO must submit an accountability report within 60 days after the funds were allocated.

"However, there are still many NGOs that have not filed the reports for more than one year," he said.

Thus far, the minister said that he had ordered the Inspector General in the ministry ordering every NGO to submit their reports immediately.

The total amount of donations reached Rp 113 billion (US$12.7 million) of which Rp 94.2 billion was used to help the victims of natural disasters and NGOs nationwide. The outstanding balance of the fund is now Rp 18.8 billion. -- Antara
