Ngawi Prison Fire: All Inmates Reported Safe
A fire broke out at the Class IIB Correctional Facility (Lapas) in Ngawi, East Java, but all inmates were reported safe. “Alhamdulillah, all inmates are safe,” said Ngawi Deputy Regent Dwi Riyanto Jatmiko (Antok) to reporters at the scene on Friday (14/8/2026). According to Antok, the fire did not originate in the inmates’ quarters but in another room. The fire has since been extinguished. “The fire has been put down, alhamdulillah. Now only smoke remains at the site of the fire,” Antok said. Antok added that the fire occurred around 3:30 PM Western Indonesian Time. The firefighting effort involved four fire engines, three from the Fire Department and one from the Ngawi District Military Command. “There were four fire engines, three from the Fire Department and one from the Ngawi District Military Command. The cause is still under investigation by the Ngawi Police,” Antok stated.
