Newly Inaugurated UK PM Immediately Cuts Electricity Tax

Newly inaugurated British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a reduction in electricity bill taxes. The move forms part of Burnham’s initial policies intended to ease the cost-of-living burden on the British people. The policy also aims to quell public anger following the previous government’s failure to deliver change. On his second day in office, Burnham announced that his government would abolish value-added tax (VAT) on household electricity bills starting 1 October. The policy will cut approximately £45 from the average annual bill of £1,862 paid by households. Amidst intense scrutiny from bond investors regarding the funding source for any fiscal support, Burnham explained that the electricity tax cut would be financed through savings from cancelling a £1.8 billion digital identity programme. Burnham had previously announced the cancellation of the digital ID programme on Sunday. “We are taking immediate action to cut electricity taxes, boost people’s take-home pay, and restore hope,” Burnham said in a statement, after pledging to give the British people more “breathing space” in their lives. Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, appeared keen to act swiftly to demonstrate to the public that he is serious about helping them. On Monday, Burnham acknowledged that his initial policies might not “remove all the burdens” faced by people struggling with rising prices. However, he said that long-term plans would be set out in due course. During his first cabinet meeting with senior ministers, Burnham reiterated that fiscal discipline would be the benchmark for his new government, alongside efforts to make living costs more affordable. “This is a second chance to make a first impression,” Burnham told senior British ministers, according to his spokesperson.
