New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani has welcomed Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung’s plan to issue municipal bonds and is prepared to send a financial team to share expertise with the Jakarta Provincial Government.

This was discussed during a bilateral meeting between the two city leaders at Civic Hall, New York, on Sunday (20/9).

“I am very enthusiastic about and support Jakarta’s plan to issue municipal bonds. New York has also utilised bonds to finance infrastructure development, including waste management and various public facilities,” Mamdani stated, as quoted from an official statement on Monday.

Mamdani indicated that his administration is ready to send a financial team to share experiences with the Jakarta Provincial Government regarding the preparation and process of issuing municipal bonds.

During the meeting, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung also shared Jakarta’s strategies for tackling congestion and developing public transport with Mamdani. One of these strategies involves the development of the Transjabodetabek system to strengthen connectivity between Jakarta and its satellite cities, while simultaneously reducing private vehicle usage.

Furthermore, Pramono explained to Mamdani that the Jakarta Provincial Government provides free public transport services to 15 groups of people, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, and students receiving the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) and students receiving the Jakarta Superior Student Card (KJMU).

Pramono also detailed Jakarta’s efforts to manage flooding through the construction of flood control infrastructure, the reduction of groundwater extraction to mitigate land subsidence, and the development of a Giant Sea Wall.

The bilateral meeting served as a platform for Jakarta and New York to exchange experiences in addressing the challenges of major cities, while opening opportunities for more concrete cooperation in urban development.
