The residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was targeted with an improvised explosive device during a protest last weekend. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the New York City Police Department’s bomb disposal team determined the object was a genuine explosive device, not a hoax or smoke bomb.

The object at Mamdani’s residence remains under investigation. Two male suspects were apprehended at the scene.

According to Mamdani’s account, the protest was staged by supporters of white supremacist Jake Lang at his official residence, Gracie Mansion. Mamdani indicated the protest was likely motivated by racism.

“Hatred based on prejudice has no place in New York City,” Mamdani said firmly.

Mamdani emphasised that violence during protests cannot be tolerated. He expressed severe condemnation of the presence of explosives.

“This is utterly contrary to who we are,” he stated.

Mamdani thanked the officers who responded quickly to the incident. The NYPD is investigating the case with the FBI through the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Mamdani became the first New York City mayor to be sworn in using the Quran. He was officially inaugurated as New York City’s first Muslim mayor on Thursday, 1 January, with the oath-taking ceremony held at the former Old City Hall subway station.

His first meeting with President Donald Trump on Friday, 21 November, proceeded in a warmer manner than many observers had anticipated. Several Republican figures in Washington, including close allies of Donald Trump, have attempted to revoke the citizenship of the newly elected New York City Mayor.
