New York City Mayor Admits Inability to Arrest Netanyahu

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has admitted his administration cannot arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, citing a lack of authority to execute an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant. Mamdani stated that while his administration had reviewed its options, it does not possess the independent legal power to detain Netanyahu. He called on the United States federal government to enforce the ICC warrant if Netanyahu enters US territory. In a video statement, Mamdani labelled Netanyahu a ‘war criminal’ and the ‘mastermind behind the horrific genocide against the Palestinian people’, asserting that the Prime Minister is not welcome in New York City. The controversy follows Netanyahu’s postponement of a US visit and comes as the ICC warrant accuses him of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the war in Gaza. Mamdani insisted that anyone indicted by the ICC should be arrested and tried.
