New WhatsApp Feature to Ease Awkwardness When Joining New Groups

Some users may feel awkward when joining a new WhatsApp group, as new members typically feel the need to introduce themselves. Fortunately, this awkwardness may soon be resolved, as WhatsApp is reportedly developing an interesting new feature.

This feature is designed as a solution for users who frequently ignore the group description field. When joining a WhatsApp group, new members can actually read the group description created by the admin to explain the group’s purpose or other important information. However, this description is often overlooked because users tend to focus immediately on the incoming messages in the chat space.

With this new feature, new members can immediately understand the group’s purpose, feel warmly welcomed by the community, and participate more quickly in the chat without having to guess the context. The settings to configure this welcome message will be placed within the group permissions screen managed by the admin.

The welcome message feature will be optional and will not be active by default. This means a group will not display a welcome message unless the admin chooses to manually enable and set it up. Interestingly, even if a group is managed by multiple admins, the group can only have one primary welcome message. All admins will share the same welcome text to ensure that the group introduction remains consistent for every new member who joins.

The message can be designed in various ways, such as including an invitation for new members to share a little about themselves so that everyone can get to know each other. The introduction of this welcome message will further complement WhatsApp’s efforts to enhance the group chat experience, making it more organised for newcomers. Previously, in February, WhatsApp also announced a feature that allows users to share chat history with new members.
