New Toll Roads in Java and Sumatra to Double as Emergency Airstrips for Fighter Jets

The government is preparing several toll road sections that can function as landing sites for fighter jets. This was conveyed by Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.

“Yes, there are several toll road sections that we have been mandated to make usable for fighter jet landings in emergency conditions,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Public Works office on Wednesday (22/7/2026).

Dody mentioned that this policy is one of the government’s efforts to prepare integrated infrastructure that is adaptive to strategic defence requirements. Several toll road sections are predicted to have special qualifications as aircraft landing facilities. These include the Probolinggo-Situbondo-Banyuwangi (Probowangi) Toll Road and the Jakarta-Cikampek (Japek) II Selatan Toll Road.

He gave an example that testing and specification adjustments on Java Island will be centred on the Trans-Java Toll Road, specifically the Probowangi Toll Road and the Japek II Selatan Toll Road sections. Meanwhile, in Sumatra, trials will be conducted in Lampung, precisely on the Terbanggi Besar - Pematang Panggang - Kayu Agung (Terpeka) Toll Road. Still in Sumatra, trials will also be carried out on the Sigli-Banda Aceh Toll Road.

Dody further explained that his ministry will conduct trials using a modified A-30 asphalt mixture on the Probowangi and Japek II Selatan toll road sections. This mixture is a combination of imported asphalt and Buton asphalt, aimed at reducing asphalt imports.

“So we will pave using A-30 asphalt, with the cost borne by the service provider,” he concluded.
