New Taxation Office to Target Jakarta’s Jet Set
The government plans to open a special tax office in April catering to wealthy Jakarta residents, in a move that could raise income tax revenue by focusing on an estimated 1,200 taxpayers with assets of more than Rp 100 billion ($8.3 million), said Darmin Nasution, director general of taxation, on Wednesday.
“This office will only serve affluent Jakarta residents - mostly businessmen,” Darmin said, adding that more special tax offices would be opened in other cities if the program was successful.
Darmin said he suspected there were still a lot of rich Indonesians who were not paying income taxes correctly.
“We also want to collect data from these people,” he said. “It will make it easier for us to investigate if they are tied to any examples of tax fraud.”
In January, the tax office recorded a more than 100 percent increase in personal income taxes compared with business taxes, which fell 3.8 percent.
