New Study Reveals Homo floresiensis Likely Not a Big-Game Hunter
The tiny ancient human species Homo floresiensis, nicknamed the ‘Hobbit’ and discovered on the island of Flores, once baffled scientists who believed it could make complex tools, use fire, and hunt large animals despite having a small brain. However, a new study published in the journal Science Advances has successfully dismantled the long-held assumptions about the Hobbit’s impressive intelligence. Shortly after the discovery of Homo floresiensis in 2003 at Liang Bua Cave, researchers found cut marks on fossilised bones of Stegodon, a dwarf ancient elephant relative about the size of a cow. The fossils were buried in the same soil layer as the Hobbit’s stone tools. At the time, many immediately concluded that the bones were evidence of the Hobbit’s food remains, based solely on the fact that the bones and stone tools were found together in one location. To test the hunting theory, Elizabeth Grace Veatch, a paleoanthropologist from the University of Tübingen, conducted an in-depth analysis which instead showed that Komodo dragons had beaten the Hobbits to the island’s largest prey. The research team compared Komodo dragon bite marks with the marks on the Stegodon fossil bones. The results showed Komodo tooth marks clustered in meat-rich areas like the shoulder and hip, indicating these reptiles arrived first at the carcass. Conversely, cut marks from Hobbit stone tools were only found on leftover, less meaty parts, such as the feet and ribs. This fact surprised the researchers who initially thought all the marks on the bones were made by ancient humans. The evidence suggests the Hobbits likely acted only as passive scavengers, seeking leftovers from Komodo dragon kills. This finding indicates they were not as intelligent as previously thought, as big-game hunting requiring cooperation and careful planning is typically associated only with large-brained species like Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. The study also dispels the notion that the Hobbits had mastered the use of fire. Previously, the presence of charcoal and burnt animal bones in Liang Bua Cave was considered evidence of Hobbit domestic activity. However, after a review of the ancient soil layer structure inside the cave spanning a period between 774,100 and 60,000 years ago, all evidence of fire use was found to originate from younger soil layers, corresponding to when Homo sapiens began occupying the cave after Homo floresiensis and Stegodon had become extinct. Although the picture of Hobbit behavioural intelligence is now simpler, this discovery in no way diminishes the value of their successful adaptation in the wild. The fact that this small-brained species managed to survive on an isolated island for nearly one million years, facing extreme environmental challenges and coexisting with terrifying predators like the Komodo dragon, is a remarkable evolutionary achievement. Veatch emphasised that the ability to survive while isolated on an island for 50,000 years without reliance on fire or the ability to hunt large animals demonstrates how extraordinary their means of adaptation were.
