New Students Waitlisted Until 2032, SD Muhammadiyah Sapen Jogja Expands Capacity

The Central Board of Muhammadiyah has constructed a new building for Muhammadiyah Sapen Universal School in Kasihan, Bantul, as an extension of SD Muhammadiyah Sapen. It is hoped the facility will reduce the waiting list for new students at the school, which is already full until 2032. “Today we are inaugurating the Muhammadiyah Sapen Universal School building as a developmental link of SD Muhammadiyah Sapen,” said General Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, Haedar Nashir, in Kasihan, Bantul, on Saturday. Haedar noted that SD Muhammadiyah Sapen is the best primary school in Indonesia, leading to such high demand that prospective pupils must be waitlisted for years. “The public’s interest cannot be accommodated when we are still at the Sapen Timur location, so we are expanding here. In this way, Muhammadiyah wants to serve education for all,” he said. Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Regional Board for the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Muh. Ikhwan Ahada, added that the new school has six floors with a building area of 4,947 square metres on a land area of 8,800 square metres. Learning at the new campus is scheduled to commence in the 2026/2027 academic year on 13 July 2026. In its initial operational phase, the school will open two study groups, namely Grade I and Grade III, each consisting of two parallel classes. The school targets having two parallel classes for each grade level from I to VI, totalling 12 study groups with a capacity of 28 pupils per class, aiming for a total of 336 pupils. The administration office of SD Muhammadiyah Sapen previously confirmed that the registration waiting list for the 2027 to 2032 academic years is already full, with some parents even beginning to register for 2033. Parents are typically drawn to the school’s academic achievements, curriculum, teaching methods, and its disciplined approach to character and religious education.
