New role of Mister and Miss Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): The city administration will hold the 26th
annual Mister and Miss Jakarta contest as part of the
celebrations marking the city's 468th anniversary.

Registrations of entry in the competition will be accepted at
the offices of all five mayoralties next month, Head of the City
Tourism Office Fauzi Bowo said yesterday.

"Each mayoralty will hold a preliminary selection to pick five
couples to represent their respective areas," Fauzi said, adding
that the grand final would be held in August.

He said that this year the selection process would be more
stringent than in previous years because the city administration
intended to change the role of Abang (Mister) and None (Miss) by
giving them more serious tasks.

"We intend to make them representatives of Jakarta, who can
tell people, either locals or foreigners, about the city," he
said.

He said it was important to use competent and bright young
public relations officers to introduce the city to people. (yns)
