New Phenomenon! French Mangoes Begin Flooding Indonesia
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Indonesia produced 3.01 million tonnes of mangoes in 2025. Ironically, Indonesia’s mango exports continue to decline while imports have soared. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that only around 3,111 tonnes of Indonesia’s mango production were shipped to international markets, meaning less than 0.1% of national mango production ends up in the export market. For every 1,000 kilogrammes of mangoes harvested in Indonesia, only about 1 kilogramme is sold abroad. This figure presents a rather sharp contrast. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest mango producers, but its role in global trade remains relatively small.
Production Concentrated in Java
Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows national mango production reached 3.01 million tonnes in 2025. Although this is down 8.87% or around 293 thousand tonnes compared to 2024, the volume is still considered large. Over the past five years, Indonesia’s mango production has been relatively stable above 2.8 million tonnes. Production had reached 3.30 million tonnes in 2024 before correcting again last year. Indonesia’s mango production is also concentrated on the island of Java. East Java is the largest producer with a contribution of 43.3% or around 1.30 million tonnes. Below it is Central Java with production of 545 thousand tonnes and West Java with 425 thousand tonnes. These three provinces account for more than three-quarters of national mango production. The high concentration of production means Indonesia’s mango industry centres are practically still located in Java. BPS recorded household mango consumption at 156.68 thousand tonnes in 2025. This figure is indeed down 24.2% compared to the previous year’s 206.69 thousand tonnes. Household participation in consuming mangoes also still reached 4.28%. Beyond household consumption, mangoes are also absorbed by traditional markets, modern retail, and the processing industry. Therefore, most mangoes harvested in Indonesia never leave the domestic market.
Exports Have Not Yet Recovered
The export performance of Indonesian mangoes remains volatile. In 2021, mango exports reached 3,111.95 tonnes. However, a year later the volume plummeted to just 312.30 tonnes. Exports rose to 642.67 tonnes in 2023 and 891.35 tonnes in 2024. But in 2025, exports fell again to 704 tonnes. Compared to national production of 3.01 million tonnes, the export share does not even reach 0.1%. For a country with production in the millions of tonnes, this export volume is still very small. Indonesia’s mango export markets are also still concentrated in a few countries. The United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Malaysia are the main destinations for Indonesian mango exports. Geographic proximity and high demand for tropical fruit are among the factors supporting these markets. However, the scale of Indonesia’s export markets is still far below the world’s major exporting countries such as Mexico, Peru, Thailand, or Brazil. In those countries, mangoes have become an export commodity integrated with the logistics industry, cold chain, and international retail markets.
Imports Actually Rise Sharply
Amid weakening exports, Indonesia continues to import mangoes, and the volume has increased quite sharply in the last two years. Mango imports were recorded at 531 tonnes in 2023. This figure rose to 1,159 tonnes in 2024 and jumped to 2,766 tonnes in 2025. In other words, Indonesia’s mango import volume in 2025 is nearly four times larger than its export volume. This condition indicates that large national production has not been fully able to meet certain market needs. Some imported mangoes enter to fulfil demand for specific varieties, industrial needs, or supply outside the domestic harvest season. The import value of mangoes in 2025 reached US$ 2.32 million, up 27.1% (US$ 153.92 thousand). The main country of origin for mango imports is France with an import value reaching US$ 795.02 thousand (111.55 tonnes), India with an import value reaching US$ 746.03 thousand (736.02 tonnes), and Thailand with an import value reaching US$ 443.13 thousand (770.81 tonnes).
