New Official Vehicles Criticised, Klungkung Tourism Office Cites Urgent Need
The procurement of new official vehicles by the Klungkung Regency Tourism Office (Dispar) has drawn sharp criticism from residents on social media. Some argue that purchasing new government vehicles is inappropriate amid weak regional fiscal efficiency and budget constraints.
“The priority programs are still waiting for funding, yet the enthusiasm to buy new official vehicles continues unabated,” wrote Facebook user Tu Ririn on Suara Klungkung’s Facebook page.
“Amid this situation, the public expects to see achievements, innovation, and tangible impacts on local tourism, not just status symbols,” added Tu Tirin’s post.
In response, Acting Head of Klungkung Tourism Office, I Gusti Agung Gede Putra Mahajaya, explained the necessity for the new operational vehicles. He acknowledged the public’s criticism as valid but urged them to first understand the rationale behind the procurement.
Mahajaya stated that the vehicle purchase, approved in the 2025 regional budget, was not a spontaneous decision driven by vanity. The previous vehicle has been reassigned to the Nusa Penida Tourism Technical Implementation Unit (UPT).
“I welcome the criticism positively, but people should be aware of the reasons. This was discussed in the 2025 budget process. It’s essentially a new Avanza G, priced under Rp300 million on the e-catalogue,” Mahajaya told detikBali on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
“The old vehicle is now used for operations at the Nusa Penida UPT. The need is urgent as we’re required to boost revenue. These vehicles are necessary for monitoring hotels and restaurants, especially given the long distances between villages on Nusa Penida,” he added.
He concluded by urging residents to voice feedback responsibly and avoid blaming each other.
“As the department in charge, we learn from such feedback, and it’s natural to face criticism in the current situation,” he said.
