New Navigation Regime in the Strait of Hormuz: Iran to Impose Transit Tariffs
Iran’s parliament will introduce a new navigation regime in the Strait of Hormuz. Teheran will guarantee the safety of ship navigation while imposing transit fees.
The statement was delivered by Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, on Monday (30/3).
“With parliamentary approval, the new regime will be implemented in the strait,” Boroujerdi said, as quoted by IRIB broadcaster.
Boroujerdi added that no ship will be permitted to cross the Strait of Hormuz without Iranian permission. Teheran, he continued, will also ensure the security of ships and impose transit tariffs.
Previously, on 28 February, the United States and Israel launched attacks on targets in Iran, including in Teheran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran then retaliated by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
The escalation of conflict around Iran has resulted in a de facto blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for shipping oil and liquefied natural gas from Persian Gulf countries to global markets.
That blockade has also impacted export levels and oil production in the region. Consequently, fuel prices have risen in most countries around the world. (Sputnik/RIA Novosti/Ant/I-2)
