New mode of deception
New mode of deception
From Republika
I am a new resident at the Legenda Wisata housing complex in Bogor, West Java. I live with my wife and a 20-year-old male servant. At 7 a.m. Nov. 16, 2000, a man claiming to be a Phillips television serviceman from Glodok, Jakarta, came to our house, which is located in the Marcopolo zone. He was received by my male servant, the only one in the house at the time.
The man, who came in a dark green Suzuki Zebra van, said that I had telephoned him to have my television repaired. To convince my servant, the man took him to the nearby telephone booth to contact me. He called a number and after talking briefly, he told my servant that I was in a meeting and that I would allow him to take the television away.
Back home, he began to tinker with my television, which was actually in pretty good order. He told my servant that an important component was broken and that he had to take the television to the workshop. He then went away with my television set.
I therefore would like to call on all residents in Legenda Wisata to be careful when receiving strangers, especially because the housing complex is not very secure. I would like also to call on the management and the security coordinator of Legenda Wisata to be more strict when allowing nonresidents to enter the complex.
