New governor must be KKN-free

JAKARTA: Anyone concerned with the nomination of candidates for the position of Jakarta governor should not repeat the past mistakes, in order that the next city governor will be a "clean" person, Jakarta Residents Forum (FAKTA) Chairman Azas Tigor Nainggolan said.

"Do not repeat the same mistake by electing a governor who is not free of corruption, collusion or nepotism (KKN)," he told Antara on Sunday.

In that respect he compared the governor to a broom, saying, "A dirty broom cannot clean the floor."

According to him, many problems in the city would automatically be eliminated if KKN could be eradicated.

He noted that Sutiyoso was not the right person to be renominated as a candidate for governor for the period 2002 to 2007. He stated that Sutiyoso had failed to manage Jakarta properly and alleged he was also implicated in many problems of corruption, collusion and nepotism.

Sutiyoso, he said, had never been serious about taking tough action against those of his subordinates found to have committed such offenses.

The registration and assessment of candidates will last from June 10 through Sept.7. Election of the governor is scheduled to be carried out by the City Council on Sept. 11. --Antara
