New governor facing more challenges

KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: A local organization has asked President Megawati Soekarnoputri to not recognize the newly elected governor and deputy governor because of election violations.

"For the sake of law enforcement and the dignity of the central administration in the region, we urge the President not to swear in Ali Mazi and Yusran Silondae," said Hidayatullah, chairman of the People's Mandate Assembly (MARA) here on Monday.

He said the election committee had violated Government Regulation No. 151/2000, which requires gubernatorial candidates have a clean track record. A candidate must also report their wealth to the Public Servants' Wealth Audit Commission. -- Antara
