New Era of Internet: AI Bot Traffic Surpasses Humans, Cloudflare Reports
The internet was built on the assumption that there is a human behind every screen. However, the latest data shows that this assumption has now collapsed. According to data from the Cloudflare Radar monitoring tool, traffic generated by agentic AI bots now accounts for 57.4% of total global web requests, while humans contribute just 42.6%.
This milestone was reached far sooner than even the most aggressive projections. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince had previously predicted that bots would surpass humans by the end of 2027 or early 2028. ‘It happened faster than I expected,’ Prince wrote in a post on platform X. He confirmed that for the first time in internet history, official AI agent traffic has exceeded human traffic.
It is important to distinguish between traditional bots and the agentic bots referred to in this report. Ordinary bots, such as search engine web scrapers, surpassed human traffic more than a decade ago. Agentic bots, however, are AI systems that browse the internet on behalf of users—for example, when you ask an AI chatbot to find the latest information on the web. While humans may still engage more deeply with content, AI visits web pages far more frequently to process and summarise data for their users.
Cloudflare’s data reveals stark regional differences. North America leads in bot usage at 68.6%. In contrast, countries such as Cuba and Laos remain dominated by human users, with human traffic accounting for 80.8% and 84.7% respectively. An anomaly was observed in Gibraltar, where during peak hours up to 97% of internet traffic originates from bots, highlighting the massive adoption of automation technology in certain data centres compared to organic use by local residents.
This data provides new validation for the Dead Internet Theory, a concept that emerged in the late 2010s positing that most internet activity is no longer driven by humans. What was once dismissed as a conspiracy theory is now approaching technical reality. The implications of this shift are vast, ranging from the validity of digital advertising metrics to challenges for website owners in distinguishing genuine visitors from data-harvesting machines. Matthew Prince stated that the trend has clearly crossed a threshold and will not reverse, marking a new era in which the internet ecosystem is increasingly inhabited by algorithms rather than people.
