A new threat to global banking stability has emerged in the United States. An artificial intelligence (AI) model named Mythos is said to possess capabilities that can expose bank security flaws and potentially be exploited for large-scale cyber attacks.

Barclays CEO C. S. Venkatakrishnan has warned that the AI model developed by Anthropic represents a serious threat that could shake bank stability.

According to him, Mythos’s ability to write high-level code enables this AI to identify previously unknown security vulnerabilities.

This capability raises concerns that the technology could be used to exploit banking systems, particularly those banks still reliant on legacy technology infrastructure. If these flaws are exploited on a massive scale, the stability of the global financial sector is at risk.

“For Mythos, this is a serious issue,” said Venkatakrishnan on the sidelines of an IMF meeting, quoted from Reuters, on Monday (20/4/2026).

This warning has immediately prompted a response from regulators. Several supervisory authorities and financial institutions are now reviewing the model to assess potential cybersecurity risks it may pose.

Mythos has even raised alarms among regulators due to its potential impact on complex and interconnected banking systems.

Venkatakrishnan also reminded that the threat will not stop at one model. He predicts that advanced versions such as Mythos 2 and Mythos 3 will emerge quickly, with even stronger capabilities.

“However, there will be Mythos 2 and Mythos 3, and their emergence is likely to occur with worrying frequency,” he continued.

Such technological surges will accelerate the cybersecurity arms race, forcing banks to innovate. This challenge is deemed heavier for large institutions still running outdated systems.

“We must understand its capabilities and we must understand how to protect ourselves from it,” he stated.
