New Cyclone Seed Emerges North of Sulawesi, BMKG Issues Warning

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported the emergence of a new Tropical Cyclone Seed 96W. The phenomenon was detected in the waters north of Sulawesi, and the public has been asked to remain vigilant. The report revealed that Tropical Cyclone Seed 96W began forming on 27 June 2026 at 07:00 WIB. Its location is over the landmass of the Philippines, north of North Sulawesi. BMKG explained that the probability of it developing into a tropical cyclone is low. It is likely to move northwest over the 24 hours since yesterday. ‘Tropical Cyclone Seed 96W has a low probability of becoming a tropical cyclone and is moving northwest over the next 24-hour period,’ BMKG stated on its official Instagram account. This phenomenon will have an indirect impact on weather and sea conditions in Indonesian territory until 1 July 2026 at 07:00 WIB. One of the impacts is heavy intensity rain in North Kalimantan. Several waters are also likely to experience high sea waves ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 metres (moderate sea), from the waters of the Sangihe Islands to the Talaud Islands, the Maluku Sea, and the Pacific Ocean north of Maluku. Nevertheless, BMKG also reminded communities in coastal areas and shipping in the region to increase their vigilance due to the Tropical Cyclone Seed 96W phenomenon. ‘Coastal communities and shipping in the affected areas are urged to increase vigilance against heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves,’ said BMKG.
