New councilors request brand new official cars

TANGERANG (JP): Tangerang regency legislators installed a month ago have asked the local administration to give them new official cars, a regency spokesman said on Friday.

The 20 councilors argued that they wanted Toyota Kijang vans to assist them in their daily activities serving people since the vehicle is considered "useful in any field".

The legislators also demanded the local regency office construct official residences for them like their colleagues at the Tangerang mayoralty.

The name Tangerang is used by the regency and mayoralty in the area.

Slamet Putranto, the regency spokesman, said his office is still studying the request.

"We have to look at the budget first. If we have enough money, we will buy them," Slamet told reporters.

However, he declined to explain about the housing matter.

"It's not our business. We deal only with furniture and cars. Housing is handled by the local building agency," Slamet said.

Such "problems" presented by the new legislators include asking the local administration to renovate the councilors office by expanding the faction rooms from the original four to 11 chambers.

"We will also add one office for the deputy council speaker from the previous two rooms," Slamet said.

The total budget needed to make the renovation is being calculated by the secretariat.

Slamet also said three official cars lent to former Tangerang Regency Council legislators were not returned yet.

"They were a Corolla sedan and two Timor sedans.

"We sent letters to the former council speaker and two of his deputies. They said they want to return the cars soon," Slamet explained.

They said the cars would be returned when the new council was completely formed, Slamet said.

As of Friday, the cars were not yet returned to the administration, he said.

Local officials also planned to place the existing five-year- old Toyota Kijang and Suzuki Carry vans on auction.

"We will give priority to the owners of the cars to get the first bargain.

"But we have not yet set a price as we have to wait for official permission from the provincial administration and the West Java City Land Transportation Agency (DLLAJ)," Slamet said.

Dispute over missing or unreturned office items also occurred last week at the Tangerang Mayoralty when 11 former legislators refused to return official cars.

Reports of missing items, such as furniture, from the official Bumi Berhias housing complex in Jatiuwung were also recorded.

The municipality has asked for the return of the items, warning that they would be reported to the inspectorate or to the police as a last resort.

The officials, however, have asked the former legislators to return the items on their own initiative. (41/edt)
