OpenAI has released a version of ChatGPT specifically for teenage users, called ChatGPT for Teens. Unlike the original version, this latest AI model has several usage restrictions.

ChatGPT for Teens will limit conversations on high-risk topics, such as self-harm, violence, and eating disorders. This latest version will also offer educational tools that help students learn, rather than simply providing answers.

In addition, there is a study mode to support guided learning, homework reminders, quizzes, and visualisations.

“We believe AI should expand educational opportunities. That is why we designed ChatGPT for Teens to support moments outside the classroom when help is not always available,” OpenAI said, as quoted by Reuters on Wednesday (19/8/2026).

All these features are available when the user is estimated to be under 18 years old or identifies as being between 13 and 17 years old.

Parents of users can also set Quiet Hours, which allows them to control certain settings and receive notifications when their child discusses sensitive topics.

ChatGPT for Teens was launched at a time when many social media platforms are being sued for allegedly endangering children’s mental health.

OpenAI itself faces increasingly heavy challenges because its chatbot is often used as a place to confide, offering emotional support to its users.
