New Chapter in Nadiem Makarim Case: Appeal Hearing Scheduled for 5 August

The DKI Jakarta High Court has scheduled the inaugural appeal hearing for former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, for 5 August 2026. The appeal hearing is planned to be open to the public, allowing the community to scrutinise every process in the trial. “The first hearing is planned for Wednesday, 5 August 2026,” said DKI Jakarta High Court spokesperson Catur Iriantoro when confirmed by reporters on Wednesday, 15 July 2026. The trial will be examined and adjudicated by presiding judge Subachran Hardi Mulyana, with member judges Catur Iriantoro and Hotma Maya Marbun. Previously, the Jakarta Corruption Court panel of judges handed down a verdict against former minister Nadiem Makarim of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rp1 billion. Nadiem was found proven to have committed corruption in the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management. “Sentencing the defendant to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rp1 billion,” said presiding judge Purwanto S. Abdullah while reading the verdict at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. In addition to the prison sentence, Nadiem was also given an additional penalty in the form of an obligation to pay restitution amounting to Rp809.5 billion. If not paid, it will be replaced with five years of confinement. It is known that the verdict against Nadiem was lighter than the prosecutor’s demand, which sought 18 years’ imprisonment and restitution of Rp5.6 trillion. The prosecutor stated that based on the legal facts in the trial, Nadiem was proven to have caused state financial losses in the case.
