New Chapter in Digital Platform Worker Protection

The world of work has officially entered a new chapter, signalling a fundamental shift in how the digital ecosystem is viewed. The adoption of ILO Convention No. 193 on Decent Work in the Platform Economy at the 114th session of the International Labour Conference on 12 June 2026 is regarded as a milestone in global labour architecture. Secretary-General of the Indonesian Aspek Confederation, Triasmoko Aripan, stressed that platform work can no longer be considered a grey zone controlled solely by algorithms and the market. “Digital workspaces must submit to the principles of social justice, worker protection, and human dignity,” said Triasmoko, who was also an Indonesian labour delegate in the negotiations at the Digital Platform Committee. For Aspek Indonesia, the birth of this convention represents global recognition that technological innovation must not neglect human protection. The digital economy cannot be allowed to grow faster than the justice that protects it. President of the Indonesian Aspek Confederation, Muhamad Rusdi, emphasised that the adoption in Geneva is only the beginning. As a transitional step, his party is urging the government to immediately issue Presidential Regulation No. 27 of 2026, as promised by President Prabowo on May Day 2026. The substance of the regulation must align with the protection principles championed in ILO Convention No. 193. “This convention is a political, legal, and moral responsibility to ensure the digital transformation does not leave justice behind,” he concluded.
