An elderly man, identified by the initials GH (70), narrowly escaped being kidnapped whilst exercising in the morning in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area of North Jakarta. Two suspects are now being pursued by the police.

Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at the Penjaringan Metro Police, AKP Sampson Sosa Hutapea, confirmed that his team has already identified the suspects.

“Two suspected perpetrators have been identified,” Sampson said when contacted by journalists on Sunday (14/6/2026).

The incident occurred in May 2026, at around 6.55 a.m. Western Indonesia Time. Based on the initial investigation and CCTV footage obtained by investigators, a car was seen following the victim as he was walking to exercise near his home.

Shortly afterwards, a man got out of the vehicle and immediately approached the victim. The perpetrator attempted to force the victim into the car. The victim fought back, enabling him to survive the kidnapping attempt.

“The perpetrator tried to pull the victim to force him into the car. The victim resisted, so the perpetrator failed to carry out the kidnapping,” Sampson explained.

In the CCTV footage, the victim and the perpetrator were involved in a struggle. Both were even seen falling onto the road during the tug-of-war.

Despite his advanced age, the victim continued to resist and screamed for help. The victim’s shouts are believed to have panicked the perpetrator. The perpetrator eventually stopped his actions and chose to flee the scene before successfully taking the victim.

“The victim and the perpetrator struggled until they fell. Because the victim fought back and shouted, the perpetrator appeared frightened and then left the location,” Sampson said.

The victim is a private sector employee who has never had any problems with other parties. Police stated that the victim did not know the perpetrators. “(The victim sustained) just abrasions from falling during the struggle. There is trauma, but not severe,” said Sampson.

Sampson stated that the victim has been questioned. A total of six witnesses have been examined.
