NEVs Drive Surge in Shanghai's Automotive Exports in Q1 2026

Shanghai (ANTARA) - More than 400,000 units of new energy vehicles (NEVs) were exported via Shanghai’s ports in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026, accounting for nearly 70% of the city’s total automotive exports.

This was stated by the Shanghai Customs on Tuesday (14/4).

Shanghai, China’s largest automotive export gateway, has developed a “dual-driver” export model centred on the Waigaoqiao port area and the Nangang terminal in the Lingang New Area.

Customs data show that Waigaoqiao exported 386,000 vehicles in the first three months of 2026, a 15.9% year-on-year increase, with NEVs contributing 68.5% of the total.

Meanwhile, the total vehicle export volume at the Nangang terminal surged 111% to 207,000 units, with NEV exports skyrocketing 176% compared to the same period last year.

These figures indicate that in Q1 2026, an average of around 6,600 vehicles were exported daily through Shanghai’s ports, including about 4,500 NEVs. The main destination markets include Belgium, Brazil, and South Africa.

To accommodate the increased demand for rapid customs processing, authorities have established a “green channel” and provided nonstop appointment services.

Local customs offices are also utilising big data and risk assessment to optimise inspection processes.
