Netherlands Deploys Minesweeper to Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions
The Dutch government has deployed the HNLMS Willemstad minesweeper to the Mediterranean Sea as part of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) mission, with the possibility of redeployment to the Strait of Hormuz if necessary. Defence Minister Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius stated the vessel would join NATO’s Maritime Task Force in the Mediterranean. ‘From there, the ship can be deployed to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical trade route for oil and gas,’ Yesilgoz-Zegerius said on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (28 May). She added that the Dutch government is exploring options to deploy the minesweeper to the Strait of Hormuz alongside allied nations. Last week, military leaders from approximately 40 nations held talks led by the UK and France. A joint statement following the meeting stated that a coalition mission to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would complement diplomatic efforts to resolve the US-Iran conflict. On 28 February, the US and Israel launched joint strikes on several targets in Iran, including Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran subsequently retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East. Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire on 7 April, but subsequent negotiations in Islamabad ended without breakthroughs. Escalating tensions around Iran have led to a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the primary route for Persian Gulf oil and liquefied natural gas exports to global markets. This has impacted oil exports and production, driving up fuel and industrial product prices in many countries. Iran later launched attacks on Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East as a form of self-defence. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that US airbases were the primary targets of its retaliatory strikes on Thursday (28 May) following US military attacks on Iranian territory. Iranian state television reported that it had obtained an initial draft framework for a US-Iran agreement aimed at resolving the conflict. Tensions escalated after US military struck Iranian military sites in Bandar Abbas and shot down four drones in the Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire period. Former President Donald Trump threatened to resume military action if Tehran rejects the draft Middle East peace agreement. Former President Donald Trump ordered the US Navy to target mine-laying vessels in the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating ceasefire tensions with Iran. Former President Trump instructed the US Navy to enforce a total blockade of the Strait of Hormuz to cripple Iran’s economy. Former President Donald Trump threatened ‘high-level’ military consequences if Iran proceeds to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
