Netflix says Indonesian family films frequently enter Global Top 10

Netflix’s Director of Global Affairs for Southeast Asia, Ruben Hattari, has stated that Indonesian family films have frequently entered the platform’s Global Top 10 ranking over the past four years. Speaking at a media gathering in Jakarta on Saturday, Hattari noted that a family film has appeared in the Global Top 10 every week during this period. He said this achievement demonstrates an opportunity for the platform to enhance cooperation with local film creators to deliver more content that can be enjoyed together as a family. According to Netflix data, approximately 90 percent of subscribers in Indonesia have watched local films, and users typically view local content with their families at home. Hattari suggested this might be a unique aspect of Indonesian culture, linked to the tradition of gotong royong, or communal cooperation. He added that Netflix has introduced a ‘Kids and Family’ category featuring series and films suitable for children. The platform is also equipped with parental controls and age-appropriate content settings to ensure children watch suitable material. Hattari expressed support for efforts to provide a safe and comfortable digital space for children, welcoming the implementation of Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 on Electronic System Governance for Child Protection, known as PP Tunas. He emphasised that creating a safe digital environment is not solely the government’s task, but a shared responsibility involving services like Netflix, creators, and families.
