Netanyahu Vows to Prevent Iran from Obtaining Nuclear Weapons

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted at the possibility of taking military action amid negotiations between Iran and the United States aimed at ending the conflict. Netanyahu is determined that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons.

“Today we heard the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Ahmad Vahidi, state that Iran intends to continue developing nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu said, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Thursday (6/8/2026).

Netanyahu declared he would not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons, referring to the US as Israel’s greatest ally.

“As Prime Minister of Israel, I am determined to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons,” he added.

It was previously reported that Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said mediation efforts between the US and Iran had reached an advanced stage. He stated that both parties had exchanged draft proposals.

Speaking at a weekly ministry press conference, Al-Ansari said efforts were continuing with all parties to reach a diplomatic solution.

On 28 February, the US and Israel launched a war against Iran which, according to Iranian authorities, killed more than 3,000 people. Iran responded with attacks on countries in the region that host US assets.

In June, Qatar joined Pakistan as part of a mediation team between Washington and Tehran, which led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding on 18 June and the start of negotiations towards a final agreement.

The talks subsequently stalled due to differences over maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Between 8 July and 24 July, tensions escalated again when the US carried out strikes on Iran, prompting Tehran to target what it described as US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, notably Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
