Netanyahu Threatens Iran, Israel Ready to Act Alone

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that his country could take unilateral military action against Iran, even as the United States continues to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. Netanyahu stated that Iran remains Israel’s greatest security threat and that diplomatic efforts have so far failed to eliminate the risk. He based his remarks on comments by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Ahmad Vahidi, who reportedly affirmed Iran’s intention to continue its nuclear weapons programme. ‘We heard today IRGC Commander Ahmad Vahidi state that Iran intends to continue developing nuclear weapons,’ Netanyahu said, according to Anadolu. He stressed that his government would take all necessary steps to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. ‘As Prime Minister of Israel, I am determined to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons,’ he added. Netanyahu also acknowledged the United States as Israel’s greatest ally but reiterated his resolve to do whatever is necessary to ensure his country’s security. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran continue. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that mediation has reached an advanced stage, with both sides exchanging draft proposals. The conflict, which has involved the United States and Israel since February, has reportedly claimed more than 3,000 lives according to Iranian authorities. Iran has launched retaliatory strikes targeting US military facilities across the Middle East. In June, Qatar and Pakistan joined as mediators, leading to a memorandum of understanding on 18 June that paved the way for final agreement negotiations. However, talks stalled over disagreements regarding maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Tensions escalated again between 8 and 24 July when the United States struck targets inside Iran, prompting Tehran to claim it targeted American military assets in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
