Nepotism and national unity
Nepotism and national unity
From Suara Karya
It is strange that Indonesians have been losing much of their
spirit of unity in the era of reform and democracy. It seems that
Indonesians prioritize their group or individual interests over
the interests of the nation as a whole.
Some people believe that amid the euphoria of reform, they are
free to do anything and forget that they must respect the
interests of other people. That's why in the recent years,
competition to pursue group interests has dominated the national
scene. Just take a look at the composition of parties and
legislative candidates that will take part in the 2004 general
election.
Also, the excessive spirit of regional autonomy has led to
nepotism. It is strange to see how people from one region, for
example, are not allowed to seek their fortune in another region.
This is really unhealthy competition.
This situation must be corrected so that Indonesians will
remain united. The majority must protect minority groups, while
minority groups must understand their own place.
Unless nepotism and other unhealthy practices are wiped out,
we will witness in the future riots caused by social envy and
unhealthy regional protectionism.
