Nepal government evacuates 184 foreign tourists after flash floods

The number of foreign tourists evacuated due to flash floods in Nepal has risen to 184, while 420 others remain unaccounted for, the Nepal Tourism Board said on Saturday. “As of 1.30 p.m. local time (07.45 GMT) on 29 August 2026, 184 tourists have been evacuated, three people have coordinated with the relevant authorities, and 420 others remain out of contact,” the agency said in a statement on platform X. Torrential floodwaters struck the Bhote Koshi river in Nepal’s mountainous region on Wednesday (26/8). According to the latest data, 626 victims have been reported dead, while more than 2,000 others are still listed as missing. The cause of the massive flood was initially thought to be an earthquake followed by a landslide. However, on Thursday (27/8), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) clarified that the seismic activity was actually triggered by a glacier collapse, not by underground tectonic plate movement.
