Nepal Flash Floods: 590 Foreign Nationals from 39 Countries Reported Missing
Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that approximately 590 foreign nationals remain missing following the flash flood disaster that struck the northern region of the country. The data was officially released by local authorities on Monday (31/8/2026).
“Around 590 foreign nationals from 39 countries are still reported missing,” according to an official statement from Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as quoted from Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
Despite the still-high number of missing persons, large-scale rescue efforts have yielded results. Authorities confirmed that more than 10,000 people have been successfully rescued from the disaster site. Of that number, 323 foreign nationals are now under the care of medical teams and relevant authorities.
Previously, on Saturday (29/8), Nepal’s Department of Tourism recorded the number of rescued foreign tourists at 261 people. However, the search figures continue to grow as new reports come in from various affected locations.
Among the survivors who have been evacuated are citizens from various parts of the world, including India, China, Spain, the United States, Russia, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, and Switzerland.
The disaster began on Wednesday morning, 26 August, when flash floods swept through northern Nepal. The incident was triggered by extremely strong water flows from China that struck the Bhote Koshi River. Conditions were exacerbated by prior earthquake activity that triggered landslides, blocking the river’s flow and creating a flash flood wave when the natural dam burst.
To date, rescue teams continue to sweep along the river’s course and landslide-affected areas to search for the hundreds of foreign nationals who have not yet been found. Nepali authorities continue to coordinate with the embassies of the relevant countries for the identification and repatriation of survivors.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that all Indonesian citizens in Nepal are in good condition following the flash flood and landslide disaster.
Devastating flash floods and landslides have struck Nepal and China. A total of 633 people have died and nearly 3,000 are missing due to the overflowing of rivers in the Himalayas.
The Nepali government successfully evacuated 184 foreign tourists following the Bhote Koshi River flash floods. A further 420 tourists remain missing amid a total of 626 fatalities.
The Nepali government reversed its rejection of foreign aid following international pressure. Foreign experts will assist in identifying the 626 victims who died as a result of the glacier collapse.
Nepal has asked Meta and TikTok to remove artificial intelligence-generated content in the form of images and videos, fake donation QR codes, and misleading posts following the flash flood disaster.
