Neither Men Nor Women Should Become Victims
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Coordinating Minister (Menko) for Infrastructure and Regional Development (IPK) Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) highlighted the collision incident between the Electric Rail Train (KRL) and the Long-Distance Train (KAJJ) at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday night (27/04/2026). He pointed out the fact that the most affected rear carriage was the women’s-only train. “And coincidentally, the rearmost one is the women’s-only carriage. So there is certainly concern about why the most vulnerable group, for whom we have specially prepared the carriage all this time, is the one that faces the highest risk,” said AHY during his visit to Bekasi City Hospital on Tuesday afternoon (28/04/2026). “Clearly, men and women are the same; no one should become a victim in any incident,” he stressed. He added that the government’s main focus is to ensure that the public transportation system, especially railways, provides a sense of safety and comfort for all society. “So what we are focusing on is not women or men, but how the train transportation system and other public transportation systems are safe and secure. Delivering a sense of safety, comfort, and safety first is not just a slogan, but something we can truly implement well,” said the Chairman of the Democrat Party. In addition, AHY emphasised the importance of educating the public to prevent similar accidents in the future. He reminded people not to let vehicles stop or get stuck on railway crossings, which could trigger chain accidents. “Don’t let vehicles get stuck in the middle of the road, in the middle of the railway tracks. Which then one vehicle causes a chain accident, a fatal accident, and nothing is more important than, nothing is more valuable than one life,” he said. Furthermore, AHY highlighted the many unsafe level crossings for trains. “There are still quite a few level crossings, where the railway tracks coincide with land transportation routes, meaning roads crossing with railway tracks. We will investigate,” said AHY during his visit to Bekasi Timur Station on Tuesday morning. He also stated that every train crossing point must have guarding personnel.
