Neighbours held no suspicions about MZ (25), a Singaporean national suspected of murdering his girlfriend, AS (26), in Pedungan, South Denpasar. In the eyes of his neighbours, MZ was known to be friendly whenever they crossed paths, even though the victim’s body was later discovered to have been hidden for five days inside the rented house.

Police tape still stretched across the rented house that was the scene of the murder on Thursday (16/7/2026). Dolls were seen scattered in the yard following the evacuation of AS’s body. The victim’s remains were found hidden under a pile of dolls and a carpet.

Yanik Prawira (39), who lives right next door to the rented house, was still in shock. He said he only found out the house next to his was a crime scene after returning from work and finding the location suddenly crowded on Wednesday (15/7/2026).

"Of course I was shocked, especially since it’s right next door. He’s number two, I’m number three," Yanik said when met at his residence on Thursday (16/7/2026).

According to Yanik, the residential area is usually quiet at night. He therefore did not expect his neighbourhood to suddenly be in uproar after the case was uncovered.

Yanik admitted he had only been living in the rented accommodation for about four months, so he did not interact very often with MZ or AS. However, whenever they met, MZ always greeted him warmly, leading him to view the man as an ordinary neighbour. Meanwhile, he more often saw AS tending to the cat cage in front of the house.

"I saw the woman cleaning the cat cage out front," he said.

Yanik also claimed he did not hear or sense anything amiss on the day of the incident. He did not even smell any foul odour, despite the victim’s body later being found to have been stored in a room of the rented house for five days.
