Neighbors race to celebrate Aug. 17

Theresia Sufa, The Jakarta Post, Bogor

Independence Day in Bogor is one of the few days when traffic in the city is light as residents prefer to stay home and take part in fun events held in their neighborhoods.

Sack races, panjat pinang (a greasy pole-climbing competition) and kerupuk (cracker) eating were among the most popular games The Jakarta Post observed, where children and parents competed for prizes, including clothing, household appliances and cash.

In the housing complex for the Army Strategic Reserve Command's medical staff in Ciluar, Bogor, the neighborhood held a decorated bicycle race for children.

"The fun events are not only our way of celebrating Independence Day, it also brings us together," said Niken of Tanah Sareal district.

"For us, independence means to live in peace and to have access to higher education. But we still see that education is not affordable for most people and people remain in fear of bomb threats," she said.
