NEC offers high quality education to Indonesians

The Netherlands Education Center (NEC) is a private, independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting academic cooperation and mobility between Indonesia and the Netherlands. The NEC was created by 40 universities for the specific purpose of informing candidates from Indonesia, whether higher education staff or students, about university programs offered in the Netherlands.

At this moment, more than 450 university programs conducted in English are offered at Dutch universities, some in cooperation with other universities in Europe. The programs range from a bachelors degree in fashion management to a masters degree in public health and everything in between. The Netherlands is becoming more and more popular among Indonesian students because the courses offered are relatively cheap, the country is centrally located in Europe and, last but not least, Dutch education is widely known to be of a high international standard.

The NEC office, located on Jl. Gatot Subroto, provides interested students with all details on any program: the curriculum, the fees, the duration, how to register, how to get a visa, etc. The NEC can also help students in finding their way in a wide range of courses offered in either Dutch or English. The NEC office has a reading room where many brochures and information on Dutch education are conveniently arranged; an ideal place to make up your mind about your education, about your future.

Besides direct contact with prospective students, the NEC is also closely involved in cooperation programs between Indonesian and Dutch universities, such as a combined, double-degree bachelors course in civil or mechanical engineering carried out by some Indonesian universities in Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung and a Dutch partner, The Hanze Hogeschool in Groningen.

The Hogeschool Arnheim-Nijmegen, another University of Professional Education, is inviting staff to come to the Netherlands to follow a master course in their subject and, at the same time, teach at the Dutch institution, thus enhancing international cooperation and knowledge sharing.

In this time of economical crisis, the Dutch Government, through the NEC, also offers some scholarships at pascasarjana- level. Unfortunately, the deadline for the TALIS scholarship 1999-2000 has already passed. Soon, a selection will be made from the applications submitted to the NEC. However, a limited number of scholarships is still available for those working in organizations who wish to help their staff to enhance their contribution to the development of the country. For these scholarships, the applicant must be nominated by the employer and it should be noted that courses for which these RFP-scholarships are awarded must be related to community development.
