Nearly 40 per cent of Americans believe AI causes more harm than good
Washington (ANTARA) - A poll conducted by Bentley University and Gallup has revealed that 39 per cent of Americans believe artificial intelligence (AI) causes more harm than benefits, up from 31 per cent in 2025.
At the same time, 9 per cent of respondents said AI delivers more benefits than harm, whilst 52 per cent viewed the technology’s benefits and drawbacks as equal, according to the poll results released on Tuesday.
This pessimistic attitude is particularly evident among younger Americans, with 47 per cent of respondents aged 18 to 29 saying AI is more harmful than beneficial.
That figure represents a significant rise from 36 per cent in 2025, according to the poll.
Furthermore, 79 per cent of Americans expect AI to reduce the total number of jobs, with only 6 per cent holding the opposite view.
In addition, just 27 per cent of respondents believe businesses use AI responsibly, with 3 per cent saying they are “very” confident and 24 per cent “somewhat” confident, the poll further revealed.
The survey was conducted from 4 to 11 May.
