Nearly 10,000 get jobs in Malaysia

NUNUKAN, East Kalimantan: Almost 10,000 previously
undocumented Indonesian workers in Malaysia who have been
stranded in Nunukan, East Kalimantan, returned to Sabah, East
Malaysia between Sept. 1 and Sept. 12 as they have obtained job
orders and passports.

Secretary of the government-sanctioned task force to help
workers in Nunukan, Hasan Basri, said in statement that the
number of workers and their families who remained in shelters in
Nunukan had been reduced to 13,873.

But the Immigration Office in Nunukan provided a far different
picture, saying that as of Sept. 11, there were 32,285 workers
waiting for visas and job orders.

The office has issued 25,483 passports since the exodus began
last month.

The immigration office has temporarily stopped services for
visa applications as of Sept. 1. --JP
