Navy gives scholarships

BOGOR (JP): Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Arief Kushariadi handed over yesterday 200 scholarships to students at the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB).

Each student who was given a scholarship gets Rp 100,000 per month for five years.

Arief said the scholarships were given as a token of sympathy from the "Navy family" to IPB students who badly need help to survive the economic crisis.

"The handover of the scholarships also reflects the concern of all Navy members who want to see all the young generation studying at IPB continue their studies without being bothered by financial problems," he said at the institute's Darmaga campus.

Besides the scholarships, Arief also handed over 2,000 parcels of food donations to the institute's low-level employees and nearby residents.

Each parcel consisted of two kilograms of sugar, one kilogram of cooking oil and 10 kilograms of rice.

The food donations were originally to be given to the students but were turned down on the grounds that the poor still badly needed them. (24/hhr)
