Navy foils log-smuggling

SORONG, Irian Jaya: The Navy warship KRI Hiu apprehended two vessels carrying logs out of the province without the necessary documentation.

Chief of the Sorong naval base Lt. Col. Danisworo Pandoe said that the two vessels, KM Putra 04 and KM Liga 01, operated by PT Uni Raya Timber, were arrested because they failed to show the documentation required for the shipping of the illegal logs.

"The two vessels and their crew members were arrested for further investigation," Danisworo said, citing that Sorong waters were very prone to log-smuggling from the easternmost province.

Last week, authorities at the naval base also seized 7,000 cubic meters of logs from a tugboat and so far, nobody has claimed them. --Antara
