Navy cleans up Sunter Lake

JAKARTA (JP): The Navy's Western Fleet Command organized a one-day cleanup of Lake Sunter in North Jakarta yesterday involving 1,000 people.

The cleanup is one of the command's programs to commemorate its anniversary on Dec. 5, the assistant for personnel affairs, Capt. Suparno, said after the launch.

"The participants are Navy personnel, Navy Academy students and high school students from North Jakarta," he was quoted by Antara as saying.

With the help of 15 rubber boats and two cranes, the 1,000 participants removed clumps of garbage, which has piled up around the lakeshore.

Lake Sunter is often used as a venue for various water sports, including some SEA Games events last month.

The Western Fleet will also hold several contests, such as rowing, ocean swimming and jet ski races to celebrate its anniversary. (bsr)
