Naval Chief Reveals 100 Indonesian Navy Personnel Trained as Aircraft Carrier Garibaldi Crew
Jakarta — The Chief of Staff of the Navy (KSAL), Admiral Muhammad Ali, expressed hope that the arrival of the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi (C551) could be expedited to before the TNI Anniversary in 2026. Originally, he had targeted the Fincantieri-built carrier to arrive before 5 October 2026.
“Hopefully it can arrive earlier, before the TNI Anniversary — that’s the hope,” said Ali during a press conference at Kolinlamil Dock in North Jakarta on Wednesday (11 March 2026).
According to Ali, the Indonesian Navy is working to ensure that the first aircraft carrier can strengthen maritime defence of the Republic of Indonesia as soon as possible. He stated that negotiations between the Defence Ministry (Kemenhan), the Italian government, and Fincantieri remain ongoing.
At the same time, Ali continued, approximately 100 Indonesian Navy personnel designated as future aircraft carrier crew are being prepared to undergo training in Italy. Ali explained that the training is being conducted to ensure that the prospective crew members are capable of operating the Garibaldi.
“Training will continue to be carried out, and how best to proceed will be decided by the Defence Ministry,” Ali clarified.
