Natural Gas Terminal Explodes, 54 Injured

A massive explosion rocked Qatar’s main natural gas export terminal in the Ras Laffan industrial zone on Sunday evening local time, injuring at least 54 people. A further 18 individuals remain missing, with search and investigation efforts still underway as of Monday (22/6/2026).

According to QatarEnergy, the explosion occurred as workers were attempting to reactivate the Barzan gas supply facility, which had previously been impacted by Iranian attacks during the Gulf conflict. The operational recovery effort reportedly triggered a large fire that subsequently led to the blast.

The incident took place as Qatar was beginning to restore its energy export activities amid easing regional tensions and ongoing negotiations to permanently end the conflict. However, the facility restart process ended in an accident that adds fresh uncertainty over global gas supply security.

The full extent of the damage remains unknown. Local authorities initially reported only a small number of casualties, but several hours later, Qatar’s Ministry of Interior updated the figures to 54 injured and 18 missing.

Disruption at this facility could also spark renewed concerns over global energy supplies. Qatar is one of the world’s largest natural gas producers, meaning any hindrance to its strategic energy infrastructure can impact international energy markets.

Qatar had previously halted production at Ras Laffan after energy shipping routes were disrupted due to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The area is a crucial hub for the nation’s gas industry.

The Barzan facility itself has a production capacity of nearly 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day. Gas supply from the facility is used to meet Qatar’s domestic power generation needs while also supporting the operation of desalination plants that serve as the primary source of fresh water in the desert nation.

Qatar holds almost the entire ownership stake in the Barzan facility, with a small minority share owned by ExxonMobil. The American energy company has yet to comment on the incident.

Ras Laffan was also targeted by Iranian missile strikes last March. That attack triggered a massive blaze causing extensive damage before it was eventually extinguished. Qatar has since suspended production activities in the area.

Qatar and Iran are known to share a giant natural gas field in the Persian Gulf. The wealth generated from the gas sector has made Qatar one of the richest countries in the world. This revenue has been used to fund various strategic projects, ranging from hosting the 2022 World Cup and establishing the Al Jazeera media network to various international diplomacy efforts.
