Natuna and the Spratlys
Natuna and the Spratlys
From Sinar Pagi
One of the most important international sea lanes located in
Indonesian territorial waters adjoins the South China and Natuna
Seas. At an international conference on the Law of the Sea,
Indonesia agreed to apply the principle of free passage for
international shipping in the area, including war ships, as long
as the country's safety and sovereignty are guaranteed.
The Natuna Sea adjoins the South China Sea, where the Spratly
Islands, not far from the Natuna Islands, are presently the
center of conflicting interests involving six nations. Although
Indonesia is not directly involved in the conflict, stepping up
safety measures in the area is of the utmost importance.
The board of the Young Indonesian Sailors Organization (DPP
Pelmi) adheres to the conclusions of late Admiral Koen Djelani
regarding war management in case of an open conflict in the area,
especially in view of plans to start a big investment mining and
energy project on Natuna.
